COMPOSTABLE COCONUT/CELLULOSE DISHWASHING SPONGE
Zero Waste alternative to plastic dishwashing sponges, just a small swap, one at a time.
Over by the sink - that’s where the quiet revolution happens. Gone are those neon yokes - the plastic sponges that crumble into bits. In their place? A humble little number called a compostable dishwashing sponge, often made from plant fibres like cellulose and sisal. Looks innocent enough, but don’t be fooled - it’ll scrub a pan cleaner than you might think!
A compostable coconut/cellulose dishwashing sponge is a two-sided, plant-based, sustainable cleaning tool that replaces plastic sponges, using wood pulp to absorb and coconut husk to scrub, while reducing long-term environmental impact.
What it's made of
It has two functional layers:
-
Cellulose sponge (soft side)
Made from wood pulp, this layer is highly absorbent. It soaks up water and soap easily, making it ideal for washing dishes, wiping surfaces, and general cleaning -
Coconut fibre, scrubber (rough side)
Sourced from organic coconut husks, this fibrous layer provides a natural abrasive surface for removing grease, grime, stuck-on food and residue
How it works
The sponge combines absorption + abrasion in one tool:
- The cellulose side handles soaking and suds
- The coconut side handles scrubbing and lifting dirt
- Lathers up well with our Coconut Dishwashing Cube Soap.
It performs similarly to conventional sponges but without petroleum-based foam or plastic fibres. Using those 100% biodegradable and compostable spanges, you are embracing an eco-friendly lifestyle and contributing to a zero-waste planet.
For a household that uses a single sponge every day, it should be replaced every 1-2 months.
